The following information about anxiety includes my own view and opinion. You can take it or leave it. It’s your choice.
What is anxiety?
According to the online dictionary: “a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome”. This feeling can be constant or periodic.
Majority of the time this feeling shows itself in the abdominal and throat area. Of course, it can be at present elsewhere too, depending on the individual.
What’s important to remember here is that anxiety is an unnecessary worry about future events that hasn’t happened yet. This is a good thing in my opinion. By learning to focus on the present, you can reduce it.
However, it has another element to it, which is the past. If you had events, experiences, where you were told to “pack it in”, “just let it go”, “get over it”, etc, and you pushed those negative feelings down, and never dealt with them, they can trigger you to worry about the future. This means, the past has to be dealt with and then you can start focusing on the present.
Fight, flight, freeze
Have you ever heard of “fight, flight, freeze” response? These responses are important in our life as they help us to recognise danger. It’s good to have them, otherwise you would probably walk towards a lion without thinking that it could eat you.
Let’s say there’s an argument with another person. You can choose to fight back, leave the situation (flight), or stay quiet (freeze) and let the person do what they want to do. Those “fight, flight, freeze” responses, in that particular moment are activated, and you make your choice by what you know best. After that, in the cooling period, they are deactivated, and everything goes back to normal.
However, if you had many negative past experiences, those responses will stay active at all times, making you feel anxious unnecessarily and more often. These past experiences can be unknown to you.
